The Football Association of Wales’ Pro Licence coaching course has gained international recognition as one of the world’s premier coach education programs, attracting candidates from diverse professional backgrounds. The curriculum includes unconventional military-style training components designed to prepare coaches for high-pressure situations. Recent participants included former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, ex-Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero, club managers Luke Williams and Michael Wilde, and American coaching professionals Michael Bradley and Ella Masar.
The two-day training exercise combines realistic tactical scenarios with physical and psychological stress. Coaches participate in simulated emergency response situations, such as providing medical aid during explosions, and hostage rescue missions involving ambush scenarios. Participants also engage in strategic planning exercises within a virtual conflict environment. The training deliberately removes participants from their comfort zones, subjecting them to unfamiliar conditions and unpredictable challenges.
Matt Johns, founder of Fieri, the company administering the course, explained that the military-style training addresses universal leadership principles applicable across industries. He noted that coaches from sports backgrounds bring particular value to such training due to their competitive drive and desire for excellence. The program emphasizes learning through reflection on high-pressure situations and translating those experiences to coaching environments.
Notably, Ella Masar, an assistant coach for the Chicago Red Stars, participated while 36 weeks pregnant, modifying certain physical components while remaining engaged with strategic and tactical elements. Former United States international Michael Bradley praised the FAW’s educational reputation and expressed the significance of completing the program’s full progression from B Licence through Pro Licence. The course has produced notable graduates, including Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, establishing its credentials within elite football management circles globally.
