The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said medical tests revealed no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors, or hemorrhages. He also contracted a mild case of pneumonia during his hospital stay and is currently receiving care at a rehabilitation facility.
McConnell acknowledged the widespread public speculation about his health condition and explained his reluctance to publicly discuss his medical challenges. He noted that individuals of his generation often hesitate to disclose vulnerabilities associated with aging. The senator referenced his long-standing battle with polio, which he contracted at age two and has caused ongoing mobility difficulties that have intensified with age. He credited intensive physical rehabilitation and parental support during his childhood with enabling him to walk again.
On the advice of medical professionals, McConnell indicated he will not return to voting on the Senate floor in the immediate term, emphasizing that recovery requires time. He referenced his decision to retire at the end of his term in January, which he attributed partly to his recognition of the demanding nature of Senate work. However, he expressed determination to complete his remaining responsibilities to constituents. The senator’s office released a photograph showing him with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, to provide visual evidence of his condition.
The senator’s disclosure comes after increased pressure for transparency regarding his health status. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent correspondence to McConnell’s office urging him to provide public updates and address concerns about his fitness to serve. McConnell has experienced several health incidents in recent years, including a previous injury from tripping in 2024 and hospitalization for influenza earlier this year.
