He emphasized that scientists have reached consensus: human activities, primarily fossil fuel combustion, are definitively causing global warming, with every heatwave intensified by greenhouse gas emissions.

Hawkins addressed arguments that scientific uncertainty justifies doubt, noting that the underlying physics has been established since the 1850s. He pointed out that in 1938, an engineer first demonstrated the world had warmed 0.3 degrees and linked this to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide from coal burning. Natural weather patterns and phenomena like El Niño have always existed, but their effects are now amplified by a warmer climate. Similarly, while Earth’s orbital variations influence climate over tens of thousands of years, current rapid warming results from industrial fossil fuel use rather than orbital changes.

Comparisons to historical heatwaves like the 1976 UK event were contextualized by noting that recent heatwaves have shattered records across wider geographic areas and reached higher temperatures. Attribution studies consistently demonstrate that human activities have intensified extreme weather events, though precise quantifications vary slightly. Hawkins stressed that temperature records dating to the early 1800s, combined with ice-core data spanning hundreds of thousands of years, provide sufficient evidence of unprecedented current warming.

Hawkins highlighted that vulnerable populations—including elderly individuals, those with chronic health conditions, children, and outdoor workers—face genuine risks during extreme heat. He dismissed suggestions that higher carbon dioxide would universally benefit agriculture, noting that harvests suffer from heat stress and altered rainfall patterns. Finally, he argued that while humanity faces a major challenge in achieving net zero emissions, the human capacity to cause the problem means humans can also solve it through deliberate choices about energy use.
