The call for government action comes amid escalating climate impacts across the region. The UK is currently experiencing its third heatwave of the summer, while Europe encountered its worst heatwave on record in June, a phenomenon scientists have attributed directly to human-caused climate change. Historical data indicates that approximately 60,000 deaths were recorded across Europe during summer heat in 2022. National security officials have warned that the country faces severe risks from climate breakdown and ecosystem collapse, with potential shortages in food supplies and economic consequences potentially emerging within years.
The government has not confirmed whether it will proceed with a televised briefing, though a spokesperson noted that annual statements on climate conditions are already delivered, with the second scheduled for later this year. During the first such statement, the energy secretary detailed investments in clean power infrastructure and flood management programs. However, the UK’s Climate Change Committee has maintained for over a decade that current adaptation plans are insufficient, recommending an additional £11 billion in annual spending to address extreme weather risks adequately.
The People’s Emergency Briefing has already achieved substantial grassroots reach, with more than 2,000 community and business screenings either completed or planned.
