Anne Hathaway provided an update on the status of The Princess Diaries 3 during a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy. The actor, who originated the role of Mia Thermopolis in the franchise’s first two installments released in 2001 and 2004, discussed the project’s development timeline with host Andy Cohen.
Hathaway explained that her current pregnancy with her third child has affected her availability for production scheduling. She noted, however, that the creative team had achieved what she characterized as a significant story breakthrough. According to Hathaway, the writers decided to restart development with a new creative direction, acknowledging this represented a departure from the previous approach. She expressed confidence in the revised direction, stating the team believes the script will ultimately prove successful.
Development on a third installment was first reported in 2022. The project subsequently advanced, with filmmaker Adele Lim announced in 2024 to direct the feature. The film is intended as a continuation of the series, which follows Mia Thermopolis as she navigates her role as heir to the throne of the fictional nation of Genovia.
Meg Cabot, author of the original book series, recently shared her enthusiasm for the project. She indicated she had reviewed a script and found it compelling, requesting that subsequent drafts not be sent to her to preserve her enjoyment of the material. Cabot suggested that elements from the source novels had been incorporated into the version she read.
