Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman called on President Trump to move beyond claims related to his 2020 election defeat and instead concentrate on addressing substantive policy matters during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union.
Fetterman stated that Trump’s continued focus on the previous presidential election was “deeply unhelpful” and served as a distraction from pressing national concerns. The senator specifically cited the ongoing conflict involving Iran as an example of an issue that warranted the president’s attention. Fetterman’s remarks came three days after Trump delivered a primetime address in which he alleged that Chinese interference affected the 2020 race that resulted in his loss to Joe Biden.
The comments reflected a broader pattern of disagreement between Trump and voting security experts. Nonpartisan voting experts have determined the 2020 election was secure. Trump has asserted for years that electoral fraud occurred, though he acknowledged during a 2024 podcast interview that he lost to Biden, characterizing the margin as narrow. Trump later indicated that statement was made sarcastically.
A 2021 U.S. intelligence community assessment found that no foreign actor, including China, attempted to alter any technical aspect of the 2020 voting process. The assessment noted that Russia conducted influence operations aimed at undermining Biden’s campaign, while China did not deploy any interference efforts intended to change the election outcome. Intelligence officials concluded China did not view either candidate as advantageous to its interests and therefore avoided risking damage to the U.S.-Chinese relationship through interference.
Fetterman, who served as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor during the 2020 election, characterized the state’s results as “absolutely secure, fair and accurate,” noting that Pennsylvania’s electoral votes went to Biden.
