Kevin Keegan, one of English football’s most prominent figures, has passed away at 75. His family confirmed his death, noting he was surrounded by his wife and daughters at the time. The legendary player and manager had revealed his stage four cancer diagnosis in June, approximately seven weeks before his passing. His family initially disclosed his illness in January following hospital evaluation of abdominal symptoms.
Keegan’s playing career spanned multiple top clubs, including Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle United. During his six years at Liverpool between 1971 and 1977, he won three league titles, the European Cup, two UEFA Cups, and the FA Cup. He later captured the Bundesliga with Hamburg and earned back-to-back Ballon d’Or awards in 1978 and 1979, remaining one of only four English players to achieve this honor. Internationally, Keegan scored 21 goals across 63 appearances for England between 1972 and 1982.
As a manager, Keegan held positions at Newcastle United, Fulham, England, and Manchester City. He is particularly remembered for transforming Newcastle into title contenders during the 1990s, guiding them to promotion to the Premier League in 1992-93 and a second-place finish in 1995-96 with what became known as ‘The Entertainers’. He managed England from February 1999 until October 2000, leading the team to Euro 2000 before resigning following a World Cup qualifying defeat. At Manchester City, he served from 2001 to 2005 and later returned to Newcastle for an eight-month spell in 2008.
