A teenager was killed when part of the Árbol Gordo fountain in Ciudad Rodrigo, located in Salamanca province in northwestern Spain, gave way during festivities marking the country’s World Cup victory. The structure collapsed around 00:30 local time as people gathered on and around it to commemorate Spain’s tournament success.
Emergency response teams from the Castilla y León region were dispatched to the scene following multiple calls reporting the collapse. In addition to the fatal injury, two other young people sustained injuries, with one child hospitalized with a suspected fracture to the leg. The Civil Guard was later called to the local health center where the boy was pronounced dead, and psychological support services were activated for the affected family.
Spain’s World Cup triumph came after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final, with the winning goal scored by Ferran Torres during extra time. This victory marked the country’s second World Cup championship, their first having occurred in 2010. The incident reflects a broader pattern of dangerous situations arising from large-scale celebration events, as three deaths from asphyxiation were reported during similar festivities in Mexico City earlier this month, along with another fatality from a medical emergency during those gatherings.
The city’s municipal government expressed condolences regarding the tragedy and stated hopes for the recovery of the injured parties affected by the structural failure.
