JetBlue Airways has acquired Spirit Airlines’ slots at LaGuardia Airport, comprising 12 round-trip flights, subject to final court and regulatory approval. The move represents a major shift in airport resources following Spirit’s collapse earlier this year, one of the largest U.S. airline bankruptcies in recent history.
The slots represent particularly valuable assets at LaGuardia, an airport with strict airspace restrictions and limited capacity that constrain airline growth in the New York metropolitan area. Due to these infrastructure constraints, carriers have increasingly turned to deploying larger aircraft to maximize passenger capacity rather than adding new flights. JetBlue communicated to staff that any expansion utilizing the newly acquired slots will not occur until 2027, as the carrier evaluates how best to integrate them into its broader network strategy.
JetBlue has expressed interest in relocating to Terminal A, known as the Marine Air Terminal, which previously served as Spirit’s base of operations until the carrier ceased operations earlier this year. The Art Deco facility was formerly used by JetBlue before the airline relocated to a newer terminal facility. The carrier characterized the Marine Air Terminal as a convenient facility favored by travelers.
The development occurs as JetBlue pursues expansion elsewhere in its network. The airline announced last month that it would reduce its staffing presence at both LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey while significantly expanding operations at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. Spirit’s airport assets continue to be processed through U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York as the carrier’s operations are wound down.
