A technical malfunction in Amazon Web Services’ billing infrastructure resulted in customers receiving dramatically inflated invoices during the early hours of Friday. The glitch affected the billing and cost management console starting at 3:38am UK time, with affected users reporting bills in the billions or trillions of dollars for services that typically cost mere pounds or dollars monthly.
Customers across multiple regions reported the erroneous charges through social media and direct communication with the company. A Hampshire-based educational nonprofit organization’s monthly bill jumped from 43 cents to $7.8 billion, while a Delhi-based student saw their regular $1.28 charge increase to $10.9 billion. A historian running a website was billed $245 billion instead of the usual $15 monthly fee. Other affected users reported bills exceeding $256 billion, prompting widespread expressions of shock and concern online.
Amazon Web Services identified the root cause as “an issue with unit pricing within the estimated billing computation subsystem” and subsequently disabled the bill estimation system. The company issued an apology for the confusion and concern caused by the erroneous figures and indicated that full resolution would require multiple hours of work to recompute estimated billing data. The company stated it was investigating the matter while customers attempted to understand the technical error that had generated the astronomical charges.
The incident drew attention to customer concerns about billing accuracy at major cloud service providers and highlighted the potential stress such system failures can cause to organizations relying on these services for their operations.
