President Trump characterized the strikes as being “in honor” of the deceased personnel. Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei responded by warning of “unforgettable lessons” should the U.S. continue its military operations. Trump has previously indicated intentions to target Iran’s power stations and bridges as part of efforts to alter Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military reported that it had redirected six ships and disabled one since reimposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports last week.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the mission had shifted toward ensuring oil shipments could move through the Strait of Hormuz following the deterioration of a ceasefire agreement. The conflict originated in February when the former Iranian supreme leader was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes. Trump has articulated multiple objectives for the war, including preventing Iranian nuclear weapons development and pursuing regime change. Oil markets responded to the escalation, with Brent crude rising 2.72% to $90.50 a barrel at the opening of Asian trading Monday.
