Edward Stourton, a prominent broadcaster and journalist whose career spanned more than four decades, passed away on Saturday at age 68. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 and continued working until recently despite his illness, which he publicly discussed in his 2023 memoir Confessions.
Stourton began his broadcasting career at ITN, where he participated in the launch of Channel 4 News and served as the network’s first Washington correspondent during the Reagan administration. He joined the BBC in 1988 as Paris correspondent and subsequently held positions including diplomatic editor at ITN before returning to the BBC to present the One O’Clock News on BBC One. His journalism also encompassed work on documentary and current affairs programmes such as Panorama, Assignment, and Correspondent.
From 1999 to 2008, Stourton served as a presenter on the Today programme, where his background as a foreign correspondent informed his reporting from locations including Lebanon and Afghanistan. He was among the first journalists to reach New York following the September 11 terror attacks. Following his departure from Today, he remained with the BBC and contributed to multiple programmes including Sunday, The World At One, and The World This Weekend, while maintaining occasional contributions to Today.
Beyond news broadcasting, Stourton authored numerous books and presented documentaries reflecting his interests in religious affairs and history. His publications included a biography of Pope John Paul II and a recent work examining American history in relation to contemporary political developments. Born in Nigeria in 1957 and educated at Ampleforth College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he served as Union President, Stourton maintained homes in south London and south-west France. He is survived by his wife Fiona, a television producer, along with four adult children.
