Chelsea completed the acquisition of France international Melvine Malard from Manchester United for a reported fee of about £850,000. The 26-year-old forward reconnects with Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, who previously worked with her at Lyon’s academy before promoting her to senior competition. Bompastor identified and developed Malard during her time at the French club, providing her with playing time that included a substitute appearance in Lyon’s 2020 Champions League final victory over Wolfsburg.
Malard expressed enthusiasm about the move, citing her long-standing relationship with Bompastor and her commitment to continuous improvement. She acknowledged Chelsea’s quality as a club while noting her familiarity with the team through previous competitive encounters. The forward joins Chelsea as the club’s third summer addition, following the arrivals of versatile defender Katie McCabe and midfielder Manaka Matsukubo. Her signing provides attacking reinforcement following the departure of Australia captain Sam Kerr to American club Gotham FC.
At Manchester United, Malard had become a key attacking asset. In the previous season, she accumulated 19 goal involvements across all competitions, making her the club’s leading attacking contributor. Across European competition, she has scored 17 goals in 46 Women’s Champions League appearances while winning the competition on four occasions. For the French national team, she has recorded 14 goals in 41 appearances, participating in both Euro 2022 and Euro 2025.
United officials sought to retain Malard by offering contract extension terms, but she communicated her desire to depart early in the summer transfer window. Rather than risk losing her without compensation when her contract expired, United agreed to the Chelsea transfer. Club sources characterized the deal as a record sale for a women’s player at the organization.
