Anurag Kashyap, an Indian director whose recent film “Bandar” represents his return to directing, is presiding over this year’s Malaysia International Film Festival as jury president. He is simultaneously leading a masterclass titled “Unfiltered Realism” at the event.
Kashyap stated that his primary focus as jury president centers on identifying fresh cinematic language and approaches. He expressed interest in observing how younger filmmakers develop storytelling methods that differ from those employed by his generation. According to Kashyap, contemporary filmmakers operate within a substantially transformed creative environment shaped by artificial intelligence tools, social media platforms, and the proliferation of information sources. These factors have fundamentally altered both filmmaking processes and audience engagement with content.
Reflecting on his career spanning more than two decades, Kashyap addressed common assumptions about authenticity in cinema. He asserted that maintaining authenticity is not optional but rather a fundamental requirement across his work as director, producer, and actor. While acknowledging that budget constraints and technological limitations earlier in his career naturally influenced his films toward grounded storytelling, Kashyap contended that authenticity extends beyond visual presentation. He argued that locally-rooted stories achieve global resonance precisely because they maintain deep connections to their specific cultural contexts, rather than treating authenticity as a marketing approach.
Kashyap identified shared challenges affecting filmmakers across multiple Asian film industries, including South Korea, Japan, China, and India. Despite operating within distinct national industries, he noted these regions face comparable pressures, particularly regarding audience attention spans and the proliferation of viewing options created by streaming platforms. Rather than providing definitive guidance, Kashyap indicated his masterclass aims to facilitate dialogue where participants can exchange experiences and insights. He acknowledged his own ongoing questions about cinema’s future and expressed hope that the festival will generate meaningful conversations that provide clarity about emerging trends in the medium.
