Festival Republic, organizers of Reading Festival, announced last week that they would eliminate the BBC Introducing stage as part of a broader restructuring of performance platforms at the event. The decision came alongside plans to expand opportunities for emerging musicians through what organizers described as a wider selection process for new artists.
The BBC Introducing stage has operated at Reading Festival since 2008, providing performance opportunities to artists early in their careers. According to festival organizers, approximately 70% of UK artists scheduled to perform at this year’s event received initial support through BBC Introducing programming. Notable musicians who performed on the stage before achieving mainstream success include Ed Sheeran, Florence + the Machine, The 1975, Charli XCX, Raye, and Dave.
In place of the dedicated BBC Introducing stage, Festival Republic introduced a new Canopy stage designated for new and emerging artists. Festival organizers stated that this change would allow them to book a broader range of developing musicians beyond those selected through BBC Introducing’s traditional application process. They characterized the shift as an effort to support “a more diverse range of up-and-coming artists” with the potential to become future headliners.
Tommy Longhurst, lead singer of Reading-based band Only the Poets, expressed concern about the decision, noting that the music industry presents significant challenges for early-career artists. He cited difficulties facing grassroots music venues and characterized the elimination of the BBC Introducing stage as a lost opportunity for developing musicians.
The BBC confirmed that Festival Republic made the decision independently and indicated it would continue operating BBC Introducing stages at other UK festivals throughout the summer. A BBC spokesperson stated the organization was exploring alternative ways to work with Reading Festival in the future. Reading Festival takes place from 27 to 30 August in Berkshire.
