Leigh Halfpenny, a 37-year-old who represented Wales and the British and Irish Lions during his playing career, has agreed to expand his coaching role at Cardiff. The former full-back transitioned into a player-coach position with the club as the season concluded and will now pursue coaching full-time at the Arms Park.
Halfpenny served as Wales’ kicking coach during the recent Nations Championship summer campaign. His international playing record includes 101 Wales caps and three tours with the British and Irish Lions. During his time with Wales, he also accumulated 801 points as a player.
In his expanded role with Cardiff, Halfpenny will work across multiple areas of the team’s technical development. His responsibilities will encompass instruction for kickers on goal-kicking and touch-kicking techniques, guidance for scrum-halves on their overall approach, and development work within the club’s academy program. Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl highlighted the visible improvements in kicking performance from the previous season, attributing this progress to Halfpenny’s professional methodology.
Halfpenny expressed enthusiasm about continuing his involvement with the squad he worked with in the previous season, noting his desire to contribute value to both the senior group and emerging academy players. He also acknowledged the significance of his recent experience with the national team and indicated plans to apply those insights to his role at the club.
Van Zyl indicated confidence in Halfpenny’s coaching trajectory, describing his transition to a full-time position as a positive development for the organization.
