He initially conducted research at Cambridge University before relocating to the United States in 1987 to join the US Geological Survey in Colorado. Three years later, he moved to France, where he held a position as research professor at the Institut de Physique du Globe in Paris for two decades, eventually becoming a naturalized French citizen. In addition to earthquake forecasting, King pursued research exploring the relationship between seismically active landscapes and early human survival advantages, examining how geological features such as cliffs and rocky terrain provided natural advantages for shelter, hunting, and agriculture. He and his father notably co-authored a poem about plate tectonics that was published in the journal Nature in 1971.
King is survived by his son, three grandchildren, and his younger twin siblings. He was preceded by his former wife, Anna.
