
Researchers have identified a fossil stored in the British Antarctic Survey’s collection in Cambridge as the first dinosaur bone ever discovered in Antarctica. The specimen, a tail vertebra from a Titanosaur, was collected on James Ross Island in 1985 by a geological team who were uncertain of its classification and consequently preserved it among thousands of other specimens brought back from Antarctic expeditions.
Dr Mark Evans, the collections manager at BAS, recently recognized the fossil’s significance while reviewing specimens in storage. He consulted with Prof Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum, who confirmed the bone’s distinctive morphology as characteristic of Titanosaurs. The vertebra exhibits a hollow depression on one end and a rounded projection on the other, features that create ball-and-socket joints unique to this dinosaur group.
Based on the vertebra’s size, paleontologists estimate the animal measured approximately 23 feet in length, substantially smaller than many other Titanosaurs on record. Researchers suggest it may have been either a juvenile or an unusually small adult specimen. The fossil dates to the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 82 million years ago, when Antarctica possessed a dramatically different climate with lush forests capable of supporting large herbivorous dinosaurs.
The discovery provides valuable insights into Antarctic paleontology, where the fossil record remains limited due to challenging working conditions and extensive ice coverage obscuring geological layers. While additional dinosaur remains have surfaced in Antarctica since 1985, such findings remain relatively uncommon. The research demonstrates that the continent’s inhospitable modern environment once hosted diverse ecosystems supporting various species.
