Hertfordshire nature reserves spot rare species during heatwaves

The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust documented multiple notable wildlife discoveries across its nature reserves in the county this summer. Among the findings were a great white egret spotted near Ware and over 300 Chalkhill blue butterflies recorded at Hexton Chalk Pit near Hitchin. At the same location, surveyors identified a glow-worm for the first time in 25 years.

The trust attributed the unusual abundance of sightings to a combination of factors, including exceptionally warm weather conditions and intensified surveying and monitoring efforts throughout the region. Dan Townsend, the senior reserves officer, noted that the summer yielded remarkable records, encompassing species absent from Hertfordshire for decades as well as new discoveries for individual reserve sites. The organization manages more than 40 nature reserves covering approximately 810 hectares across Hertfordshire and Middlesex.

Temperature conditions benefited certain species while disadvantaging others. Grasshoppers thrived during the heat, and butterflies completed their developmental cycles more rapidly, resulting in higher population numbers. However, bumblebees and hoverflies experienced difficulties during the period.

The Herts Invertebrate Project, established in 2015, has facilitated several significant discoveries at trust reserves. Recent surveys identified multiple species with limited or no previous records in the county, including a planthopper at Fir & Pond Woods near Potters Bar and a leafhopper at Aldbury Nowers near Tring that had not been recorded locally since 1916. Additional findings encompassed a leafhopper last documented in the county in 1976 and a nationally rare money spider.

Other observations included Jersey Tiger moths and Hummingbird Hawk-moths, species increasingly moving northward from their traditional ranges. Townsend stated that these discoveries provide valuable insights into species presence, distribution, and adaptive responses to environmental changes, knowledge that supports effective reserve management and wildlife conservation efforts.
