Researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research have identified a marked increase in the rate of global temperature rise in recent years. Analysis of temperature data revealed that warming has accelerated since approximately 2015, with the current pace reaching about 0.35°C per decade. This contrasts sharply with the warming rate measured between 1970 and 2015, which averaged just under 0.2°C per decade. The recent warming pace exceeds that of any decade since instrumental temperature records began in 1880.
To isolate the underlying warming trend from temporary fluctuations, the research team filtered out the effects of natural climate variations such as El Niño events, volcanic eruptions, and solar activity changes. These phenomena can temporarily obscure or exaggerate temperature trends in observational data. The scientists examined five widely used global temperature datasets produced by organizations including NASA, NOAA, and Berkeley Earth, applying two distinct statistical methodologies to test for acceleration.
Both analytical approaches yielded consistent results across all five datasets, indicating acceleration with over 98 percent statistical certainty. The warming acceleration became visible in the data around 2013 or 2014, with the shift becoming clearer by approximately 2015. Even after adjusting for El Niño effects and solar variations, 2023 and 2024 remained the two warmest years in the instrumental record.
The study focused on detecting and measuring the statistical acceleration rather than identifying its underlying causes. However, researchers noted that current climate models demonstrate that periods of accelerated warming are consistent with projected climate behavior. If the warming rate of the past decade persists, the long-term global temperature could exceed the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Agreement before 2030. The future trajectory of warming will depend significantly on the pace at which global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels are reduced.
