The conversion process offers an alternative pathway for this waste material while meeting growing demand for lubricants across multiple industries, from automotive applications to jet engines. The procedure involves placing PVC in a solvent with aluminum trichloride and alpha olefins, heating the mixture to 158 degrees Fahrenheit for three hours, and extracting an oil product suitable for lubrication applications.

The research emerged from earlier work by Liu’s laboratory on converting other plastic waste types into surfactants for soaps and detergents, published in Science and Nature Sustainability. The current project involved doctoral student Eric Munyaneza Nuwayo leading the effort alongside graduate students Connor Thompson and Abby Civiello. Initial experimental attempts to chemically transform PVC molecules proved unsuccessful, yielding materials that remained soft and gooey with inadequate performance characteristics.

A strategic shift occurred when Liu recognized that further breaking down polymer chains into smaller segments could produce more valuable results. Collaborative testing with experts at Texas A&M University and Caltech confirmed the effectiveness of the resulting oil, while economic analysis by Virginia Tech colleague Xi Chen assessed production feasibility at larger scales. The research team now aims to enhance the sustainability of the production process and expand commercial availability of the lubricant to meet broader market needs.
