Participants receiving dronabinol experienced an average nightmare severity reduction of 3.7 points on an eight-point scale, compared to 2.2 points in the placebo group. More than one-third of dronabinol recipients reported complete cessation of nightmares, while an additional 21 percent reported at least a 50 percent reduction in nightmare burden. Approximately five out of six patients in the treatment group reported marked overall health improvement.

The medication appeared to work specifically on nightmares and sleep quality rather than addressing broader PTSD symptoms or accompanying depression. Mild to moderate side effects including dizziness, headaches, and increased appetite occurred more frequently in the dronabinol group, though no severe adverse effects were documented. Researchers found no withdrawal symptoms when participants discontinued the medication at study conclusion.

The research team indicated that future investigations will assess long-term safety and efficacy, as well as whether patients develop tolerance over extended treatment periods. Multiple German institutions participated in the work, which was published in Nature Medicine.
