The projectile points identified measure less than 2 centimeters in width and weigh only a few grams, characteristics unsuitable for heavy shafts but consistent with arrows from low-poundage bows based on ethnographic documentation.

The research team determined that these points could not be defaults resulting from material constraints, as the site contains abundant high-quality lithic raw material and evidence of much heavier, more robust retouched points measuring 15 to 20 times heavier and 3 to 4 times thicker within the same assemblage. The presence of multiple projectile point types in a single assemblage, particularly microlithic versions produced specifically for that purpose, occurs only at Homo sapiens sites according to the researchers’ analysis of archaeological literature and their own work on Middle Paleolithic tools. The oldest documented examples appear in South African sites predating 77,000 years ago, including the Pre-Still Bay and later Sibudu cave layers.

The findings support the proposal by archaeologist Ludovic Slimak, made earlier this decade, that Central Asia may represent the origin point for the Initial Upper Paleolithic cultural complex. As a geographic corridor between western and eastern Eurasia, depending on climatic conditions, Central Asia could have facilitated population movement or served as a refuge zone during prehistoric periods. This discovery potentially resolves temporal and typological gaps in current understanding of how Homo sapiens initially colonized Western Eurasia and Europe, as the earliest European Upper Paleolithic settlements have been difficult to align chronologically and culturally with those from the Levant, the region previously considered closest in terms of typology and technology.
