
Researchers at Monash University have developed a framework to address critical shortcomings in tropical insect conservation efforts. The research team identified four major obstacles limiting tropical insect conservation: limited global visibility of existing research, substantial data gaps, inadequate scientific infrastructure, and insufficient conservation action. To overcome these challenges, the framework recommends integrating diverse information sources beyond conventional scientific publications, including regional studies, non-English publications, museum collections, local expertise, citizen science, and social media observations. The researchers emphasized the importance of strengthening local scientific capacity and ensuring evidence reaches policymakers who can implement conservation decisions.
Bangladesh served as a case study demonstrating both the challenges and opportunities for improved insect conservation. Researchers identified 111 butterfly studies in the country, though only 34 appeared in international journals. Social media platforms unexpectedly provided valuable biodiversity data, with Facebook containing records for 167 of 169 threatened butterfly species. However, only one of 226 butterfly species studied had adequate representation within the country’s protected areas system.
The framework advocates moving away from “parachute science,” a model where tropical communities primarily serve as data sources rather than research partners. Instead, the proposed approach emphasizes locally-led research, expanded regional scientific infrastructure, improved taxonomic expertise, sustained monitoring programs, equitable international partnerships, and strengthened connections between scientists and decision-makers. The study included contributions from researchers in Australia, Bangladesh, Uganda, Hong Kong, Brazil, Czech Republic, Italy, and India.
