By carefully orchestrating quantum computing operations, the system can aggregate data from multiple electrons to produce stronger signals than would otherwise be possible.

The primary advantage lies in requiring fewer electrons to generate equivalent image quality. This capability addresses a significant limitation in biological imaging, where delicate samples like individual proteins can be damaged by exposure to large numbers of electrons. By extracting more usable information from each electron, researchers could produce clearer images while minimizing potential harm to sensitive biological materials.

Mathematical models have demonstrated that the method should provide substantial benefits over conventional electron microscopy by overcoming statistical limitations inherent in electron counting. The research team is now moving from theoretical validation to experimental implementation at TU Wien’s University Service Center for Transmission Electron Microscopy, where they are integrating an ion-based quantum computer developed by researchers at the University of Innsbruck into a functional electron microscope.

The project receives major funding from the Austrian Science Fund through the Cluster of Excellence quantA and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, with coordination provided by the University of Vienna.
