Rare Bog Grass Moth species found in Gwynedd nature reserve

Conservationists conducting species surveys at Cors Geirch National Nature Reserve on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd discovered the Bog Grass Moth, a rarely documented species in the United Kingdom. Experts characterized the find as a noteworthy discovery, given the moth’s sparse distribution across the country. The species has previously been recorded only in a limited number of English counties, including Dorset, making this identification in Wales a significant development.

During a single night of moth trapping at the reserve, researchers collected 446 individual moths representing 91 different species. Among these specimens were 19 Bog Grass Moths, constituting the first documented occurrence of the species at this location. The reserve, managed as part of the Natur am Byth’s Llŷn and Ynys Môn project, provides ideal conditions for the moth’s survival. Natural Resources Wales noted that the fen habitat supports the growth of wet sedges, which serve as the sole food source for Bog Grass Moth larvae.

The survey also yielded additional rare species, including the Six Spotted Crane Fly and the Black Nightrunner Ground Beetle. Lepidopterists Steve Palin and Charles Aron noted the unpredictable nature of moth trapping work and emphasized the significance of the findings for understanding the region’s invertebrate populations. They highlighted how targeted moth recordings in specialized fen habitats continue to generate new insights into local biodiversity.

Clare Sampson, a project manager for RSPB Cymru, credited the efforts of staff, contractors, and volunteers with maintaining the wetland habitat. She noted that approximately 80% of UK peatlands have been lost or degraded, creating survival challenges for species dependent on specific environments. Sampson underscored the importance of ongoing management and conservation of fen sites to preserve these ecosystems and enable continued scientific discoveries for future generations.
