Shropshire Astronomical Society get permission for observatory

Members of the Shropshire Astronomical Society have been granted planning permission to establish a mini-observatory at Rodington Village Hall, where they have been based for 25 years. The facility will house a dome and telescope that were previously in use at the Tern Hill army base near Market Drayton.

According to the group’s planning application, the installation will create the area’s first publicly accessible astronomical observatory. Stephen Szwajkun, writing on behalf of the society, emphasized that the facility would serve as an inspiration for residents across Telford and Wrekin and the surrounding region.

Philip Osman, chairman of the astronomical society, noted that a permanent observatory would boost participation in the organization and enable expanded community engagement efforts. He stated that the dome would be the only publicly accessible facility of its kind in the county and would support outreach initiatives aimed at engaging younger people in astronomy. An agreement to acquire the mini-observatory was reached in May.

The structure will measure just under 2.7 meters in height. During the planning review, council officials determined that the proposal would not generate unacceptable levels of noise, create significant disturbance, or result in considerable increases in traffic or parking needs. Planners concluded that the facility would provide a valuable addition to community and educational resources in the area.
