Spacecraft returns to Earth after rescue mission for ageing Nasa telescope fails

A spacecraft designed to extend the operational life of a NASA space observatory returned to Earth on Friday after a mission that ultimately proved unsuccessful. The vessel, named Link and developed by Katalyst Space Technologies, had been launched in July with the goal of boosting the orbit of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a satellite that has conducted astronomical research for two decades.

Link managed to approach the Swift Observatory to within 7 to 9 miles and captured detailed imagery of its condition. However, the spacecraft encountered technical difficulties during its journey that compromised its motion control and communications systems. These problems prevented Link from executing the planned capture and repositioning maneuver that would have elevated Swift’s orbit and extended its operational timeline.

Katalyst Space Technologies, based in Flagstaff, Arizona, had secured a $30 million contract with NASA to conduct the salvage effort and assembled its mission plan within 22 months. Electronics malfunctions caused two of Link’s three reaction wheels to become inoperative following launch, and the spacecraft experienced a severe spin at one point. Although communication and control were subsequently restored, mission managers determined there was insufficient fuel remaining to complete the rescue attempt and called off the effort last month.

Without the planned altitude boost, the Swift Observatory is expected to complete its descent and re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in November. The telescope’s operational lifespan was partly shortened by solar activity, the very phenomena it was originally designed to study. Despite the unsuccessful outcome, NASA officials stated the mission advanced commercial spacecraft servicing technology and demonstrated the agency’s willingness to pursue high-risk initiatives with significant potential benefits.
